5 Ways to Stay Warm and Save Costs During Winter

Are you wondering why your energy bills have gotten higher lately? Don’t worry – you’re not alone!

As we head into winter, we crank up our heaters to stay warm and the extra energy consumption raises the energy bills. With rising gas prices, it’s a difficult choice to make – stay warm or save costs?

What if you didn’t have to give up one to get the other? Here are 5 tried and tested methods to keep warm and save costs during winter for you to try out.

1. Draught-proofing your windows and doors

The gaps under your doors and around your windows play a big part in letting cold air inside your home. Heat can also escape simultaneously through these gaps so seal off gaps around your windows and doors to keep the heat inside. If you want to take it a step further, install draught stoppers in your exhaust fans to fully ensure that little heat escapes your home.

2. Insulate your windows

It’s not only the gaps that heat can escape through – windows can lose up to 40% of heating. Installing blinds and curtains work well as an alternative to double-glazing your windows. Curtains with thermal lining or a thicker fabric can insulate your windows and prevent heat loss through your windows.

3. Set your thermostat

The colder it gets, the more we increase the temperature on our thermostats to combat the cold. Instead, bundle up and set your thermostat between 18 and 20°C for the most energy efficient operation of your heaters. Every degree you increase can add 10% to your energy bills so think carefully before you crank the heat up next time!

4. Set timers

Timers help cut down on running heaters unnecessarily like when you’re not home or overnight.  Set timers for your appliances to start and stop at specific times, reducing the need to keep them running when they are not needed.

5. Heat your water more efficiently

Did you know that hot water heat pumps are up to 3 times more efficient than traditional water heaters? This means that they use up to 3 times LESS energy than traditional water heaters (like a gas storage heater) to heat the same amount of water. They work well even in lower temperatures and will give you instantaneous hot water without having to run the tap to wait for it to heat up.
