Rising beyond the important 1.5°C mark, and doing irreversible damage to the planet. This means there will be more extreme weather events like heat waves, sea level rises and up to 70% – 90% coral reefs extinction. Climate change poses great danger to Australia’s national treasure, the Great Barrier Reef.
One of the most well known and powerful ways to reduce both energy bills and carbon footprint is pairing solar panels with heat pumps. By leveraging solar-generated power to keep the heat pumps running, homeowners can enjoy reliable and consistent hot water with little reliance on the grid. The Rise Of Hot Water Heat Pump
Because of the urgent climate change, the Australian Government has set up policies and laws to strengthen new houses and firms’ environmental standards, encouraging homeowners and businesses to look for more sustainable heating and cooling solutions. Since then, hot water heat pumps have emerged as a green alternative to gas and traditional electric hot water systems. These heat pumps not only reduce energy consumption but also help lower carbon footprints. Switching to heat pumps also means significantly reducing GHG emissions from fossil fuel combustions to power gas water heaters.
How Hot Water Heat Pump Works
Hot water heat pumps (air source) use electricity to transfer heat from the surrounding ambient air into water, rather than generating the heat using gas-combustion directly. The process makes them notably more efficient than conventional heating methods. Because they extract heat from the ambient air, they require much less energy to operate compared to traditional electric systems or gas water heaters.

Potential Environmental Considerations
1. Refrigerant Use
Heat pumps rely on refrigerants to transfer heat. Some older refrigerants have a high global warming potential (GWP), which can contribute to climate change if leaked. However, newer models use environmentally friendly refrigerants with lower GWP.
At ENEFT, we use R290 refrigerant for our air source heat pump. The refrigerant is natural, with a GWP of 3 (very low).
2. Manufacturing and Disposal Impact
Like all appliances, hot water heat pumps have an environmental impact during production and disposal. Manufacturing involves resource extraction and energy use, while improper disposal can contribute to electronic waste. Proper recycling and choosing durable, high-quality units can mitigate these concerns.
